DRAFT — pending legal review
How games are ranked
Version 2026-10-draft
This page explains the main parameters that decide the order of games on Bastard Games, as online marketplaces must do for consumers (Directive 2005/29/EC as amended by Directive (EU) 2019/2161, the Omnibus Directive) and for business users (Regulation (EU) 2019/1150, Article 5). [TBD by counsel: confirm these are the right provisions]
Browse
The Browse page and the home page list games from newest to oldest. The date that counts is when the game's current live release went live, so publishing a new version of a game moves it back to the top. Nothing else changes the order.
Search
A search matches a game when your search text appears, as one unbroken piece of text, in its title or its tagline, or when it is exactly one of the game's tags. Matching is not case-sensitive. Results are in the same order as Browse: newest go-live first. There is no relevance score, popularity score or personalisation.
Tags
A tag link such as /games?tag=puzzle shows only the games that have exactly that tag. They are in the same order as Browse.
What does not affect ranking
- Nothing is paid placement. A developer cannot pay to rank higher, and we do not sell featured slots.
- Sales, downloads, reviews, a developer's fees and a developer's past behaviour do not change the order.
- Games on hold for review are not listed at all until the review is done. Removed games are not listed.
- We do not rank differently depending on who is looking.
Changes
If we add another way to order games, for example by popularity, we will update this page before it takes effect.
